PRESERVING AND ELEVATING HISTORY
The antique wooden skis used in Masi's work date between
1900-1960, and are found throughout her home state of Michigan. Each ski varies
in condition and design, with bindings ranging from simple
leather straps to metal spring "bear traps."
To prepare them for painting, Masi follows an archival-
quality process of sanding and priming each ski. By
balancing preservation with artistry, she ensures that each
piece remains both a tribute to the past and a lasting work
of art for the future.
Sourcing
The vintage skis are found through antique fairs, consignment shops, and local resellers. The skis themselves were likely used at Michigan ski areas from the 1940's-1960's.
PREPARING
The bindings are carefully removed, and the skis are cleaned and sanded down to a smooth surface before being primed with archival painting materials.
PAINTING
Masi plans each composition to fit the unique dimensions of the work. She creates the paintings with layers of oil paint, building up texture and atmosphere to create an immersive landscape.
